Future Author Scholarship – Writer’s Forum

Writers Forum
Future Author Scholarship

The Writers Forum announces a Future Author Scholarship competition open to high school seniors in Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity Counties. In order to recognize and encourage writing talent, the Writers Forum is offering a single scholarship award of $500.00 to the applicant with the best published writing samples. All writing samples must have been previously published in a school or community newspaper, literary magazine, journal or anthology.

The Writers Forum, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983, is dedicated to promoting writing as an art and as a profession and to supporting and inspiring writers in Northern California. Meetings and events sponsored by the Writers Forum are held in Redding.

All high school seniors attending either public or private school in the counties of Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity are eligible to submit at least one, but no more than three, bylined samples of their own published writing. No collaborative work or electronic submissions will be accepted. Only one entry form per senior will be considered. Distribution of the actual $500 scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of proof from the winning student of enrollment or continued attendance at an accredited institution of higher learning including any community college or four-year university.

Submitted materials cannot be returned, so applicants are encouraged to submit clear, legible photocopies of clipped materials on 8½" by 11" sheets. Each writing sample should also include the publisher's masthead or publication title as well as the date of publication. Each author's entry or group of entries must be accompanied by a completed official entry form.

Entry forms

  • may be downloaded here. You will need a copy of Acrobat Reader. If you do not have one, you may download a free copy here.
  • may be obtained via a special request mailed to:
    Scholarship Committee Chair
    George L. Winship,
    2273 Knobcone Ave.
    Anderson, CA 96007.
  • will also be mailed to the principal and/or journalism instructor at each accredited high school as determined by each county's Office of Education.

Entries can either be poetry or prose and will be reviewed and judged on the following four criteria:

  1. Clarity of writing
  2. Technical proficiency
  3. Originality
  4. Emergence of a personal style or voice

All entries must be submitted by mail and postmarked no later than April 1, 2010. They should be addressed to:

Writers Forum Future Author Scholarship
c/o George L. Winship
2273 Knobcone Ave.
Anderson, CA 96007

The scholarship recipient will personally receive his or her award certificate on or prior to the scholarship awards ceremony or graduation exercise for his or her school.

The winning entry or group of entries or significant excerpts thereof will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Writers Forum newsletter and posted on the organization’s Web site.

Authorship and Plagiarism: All written work must be original and executed by the student submitting the entry. Submissions that infringe upon the intellectual property rights of any other individual or entity will be deemed ineligible and immediately disqualify the entire entry from any further consideration.

Copyright Release: From the time and date of submission, all copyrights become the property of the Writers Forum of Northern California. Rights to an entry not selected as an award recipient will automatically revert to the author at the time the award recipient is announced. Copyrights for entries selected for awards will be retained for one year from the date of selection. During this period, the Writers Forum may, at its sole discretion, use, publish or otherwise display the work without compensation to the author. At the end of the one-year period, all rights to the work shall automatically revert to the author. The Writers Forum does not copyright individual works, only the publications in which they appear. By signing the entry form, the student agrees to the terms of this release.
