The Napping House – Book Review by S.A. Barone

The Napping House, by Audrey Wood

Book Review by S. A. Barone

The Napping House, where everyone is sleeping, was written by Audrey Wood and illustrated by her husband Don Wood.  This wonderful book, with its rhythmic, repetitive text and witty pictures will sure be a winner with all young children.

The author, Audrey Wood, created an appealing bedtime book that will easily become a classic, if is hasn’t already.

The lovable characters are a snoring granny, a dreaming child, a dozing dog, a snoozing cat, a slumbering mouse…and a wakeful flea.   The sleepy household congregates on Granny’s bed, slowly building a very relaxed pile of bodies in shifting positions.  Young readers will enjoy keeping track of the bodies as they make their way, one by one, to the bed.

Don Wood’s illustrations are done in oils on pressed board that capture the sleepy quiet atmosphere of the story.  They are done in blues and greens showing that it is dark and rainy outside, perfect sleeping conditions.  As the story progresses the pictures get brighter and brighter until everyone is awake and the sun is coming through the window.

This is charming, whimsical story should definitely be in every child’s library.

Happy Reading!
