Dawn in Wetlands (Debee Holland-Olson)

Weaverville, California, April 24, 2012 – Debee Holland-Olson is the featured artist for May at the Main Street Gallery. A gifted artist from an early age, Holland-Olson works almost exclusively in pastel and dry pigment that captures intimate glimpses of her environment with a major emphasis on value and atmospheric perspective. “I like to create depth in a painting, to visually take the viewer into the scene. I want my paintings to be a refuge,” says Holland-Olson. Her paintings have a feeling of comfortable familiarity and peace, which is partially due to the vanishing rural landscape and habitat areas she paints.

The artist has created a new series of work based on her plein air studies of the California wetlands, waterfowl, and photographs and personal experiences within the National Recreation Area of Whiskeytown, a favorite place for the artist since childhood. Holland-Olson has a passion for the conservation of open lands and wetlands, and participates in land-trust events in Shasta and Mendocino counties and the Truckee-Donner area.

Holland-Olson majored in art Shasta College focusing on illustration and painting. She received her bachelor’s degree in fine art from California State University, Chico, concentrating on illustration, painting, and printmaking. Holland-Olson began her postgraduate work at Humboldt State University.

For 32 years, she was an artist-educator in Trinity County teaching students K through12. Holland-Olson owns and operates an art studio in Weaverville. Her works are held in private collections and corporate foundations nationally.
