Karen Hammer and Evelyn Mercer Ward – Featured Artists

Karen Hammer & Evelyn Mercer Ward

Featured Artists in July at Mail Street Gallery

Weaverville, California, June 28, 2012 – This month the Main Street Gallery is proud to present the work by two of our most recognizable artists in Trinity County: Karen Hammer and Evelyn Mercer Ward. These two talented artists provide us with completely different visions of the world around us.

Evelyn Mercer Ward "Alps Color" 14"x11" watercolor

Almost everyone recognizes a painting by Evelyn. Her work is known for her use of color in her fluid and original watercolor paintings. She is an active part of the great gathering of artistic talent in the North State. Her paintings express emotion often using a wealth of hues regardless of the subject's natural colors. Evelyn, a prolific painter, combines her vivid purples, bright greens, and vibrant yellows into stunning combinations reflecting our natural surroundings and draws the viewer’s eye into her imagination to give us a colorful world we otherwise would not envision. “It has a quality of lightness and breath that lifts my heart.”

One key difference between Evelyn and Karen’s work is that Karen strives for photo-realism.  Inspired by Norman Rockwell's talent, story, and humor in his paintings, Karen brings life to her paintings by creating her own compositions and stories with scenes from her travels and her home here in Trinity County. She has been painting with watercolor for the past ten years, but has also worked in oils, pastels, and metal, designing and helping construct the “Welcome to Weaverville” signs on either end of town. The clarity and lightness of color in water is what draws her to this medium.  She especially enjoys painting portraits, animals, and still life.

Both of these highly respected artists have received many honors for their work and have exhibited in many galleries throughout California and beyond. Evelyn, a self-taught watercolor artist, and a former Shasta College art instructor, continues to hold workshops for aspiring artists in Trinity and Shasta Counties. Karen and Evelyn were instrumental in saving the Main Street Gallery and are cornerstones of the all-volunteer group of ten women who work tirelessly to run the gallery.
