Making a Paper Bouquet

This project will teach small children a new method to cut paper, (tearing).    They will create a pleasing compositional flower arrangement.  This project is a good one to do around the holidays or Mother’s Day.

 YOU WILL NEED:

Assorted construction paper

12” x 18” white paper

Glue

Scissors

Pencil

First have the children cut out stems from their construction paper.  They can cut them as thick or thin as they like, not too thin though, they might tear.  They can cut them straight or wiggly, around 4 or 5 should do it, more if they want a large bouquet.  Set the stems out of the way.

Have the child look at pictures of flowers to get an idea how flowers are but encourage them to invent and/or draw their own kind of flowers.

Give them their colored construction paper and have them start tearing the petals and leaves for their bouquet.  They can also draw their flowers and cut them out if they prefer, but I have always found with most children in my classes they love tearing up paper.

When they are done tearing, they are ready to start assembling their bouquet.  They can start anywhere, however I have found the child has an easier time if they glue their flowers first then go from there.

When all is finished, the picture can be matted for a more finished look.

Have fun and keep creating
