Art Quilt Exhibit at The Main Street Gallery January 2013

The Main Street Gallery begins the New Year with “The Art Quilt” exhibit Saturday, January 5. This exhibit promises to be another beautiful show at the Gallery.

In January 2012, “The Quilt as Art” show was enthusiastically received by quilters and non-quilters alike. Participants presenting their beautiful artistic fabric creations this year include Alexandra von Burg, Faultline Group (Berkeley); Joan Dyer, Pamela Berry, Karel Hendee, and Christine Barnes of the Mountain Valley Quilters Group (Grass Valley).

Quilt art, sometimes known as art quilting, is an art form that uses traditional quilting techniques to create art objects. This form of fabric art has developed in the last few decades as fabric artists and quilters expanded their horizons beyond traditional quilt designs to embrace a remarkable realm of creative expression.

Practitioners of quilt art create their works based on their experiences, imagery, and ideas rather than on traditional patterns. Although quilt art originated in traditional quilting techniques, quilt artists now may use many different processes to create their artwork, including painting, dyeing, stamping, piecing, collage, printing (often incorporating a photograph printed onto fabric), applique, sculpting effects, and other complex cloth processes.

Quilt art generally is either wall hung, framed, or mounted as sculpture. Quilt artists increasingly exhibit their works in art galleries as fine art in addition to exhibiting in quilt shows.
