Instructor Profile – Abbie Ehorn, Cottonwood CA

I grew up in Northern California and as long as I can remember, music has been an important part of my life. My earliest memories are singing folk songs around the campfire with my mother, grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  The sounds of fiddles, guitars, banjo, and voices made me feel so happy and connected.   In high school I was involved in anything musical, from jazz choir, musicals, and traveling with “Fiddle Kids”, performing all over the western United States.

During my college years at California State University, Chico, I continued my love of music, playing in bluegrass bands, singing in the award-winning university choir, and performing in musicals.  I graduated with a teaching credential and a supplementary authorization in music.  I was hired as a first grade teacher and instinctively used music to help children learn to read.  I began to research the positive connection between music and literacy that I was seeing in my classroom.

After 10 years of being a classroom teacher, I stumbled on an opportunity to bring music to my school district that had no current music program.

I developed a highly successful music program at Evergreen Union School District in Cottonwood, CA. This program delivers sequential, standards-based music to 1000 students in grades K-8.  It integrates music with grade level curriculum themes and provides music resources to classroom teacher to enrich areas of study.

My program also offers recorder, world music drumming, dance, guitar, musical theater, and yoga to middle school students.   Community support has kept this program alive through fundraising.  For three years “Music and Merlot” dinner and auction has raised more than $70,000.

Most recently, a calling from the community has lead me to pursue extending this passion for music education to a broader audience. I have worked with the Tehama County Department of Mental Health, The Family Service Agency, Dignity Health, and private counselors and therapists to educate the community in music and drumming as a tool for healthy living.

In a full circle, my wish is to give every human being, young or old, whole or broken, the chance to discover the power and joy of music and rhythm that is already inside them.
