Children's Book Review by S.A. Barone

When little Bear wakes up very hungry from his winter nap, he sees a beehive hanging off a tree branch.  He has heard that bees ”are very terrible monsters! They are big, and they have large teeth, and they have very sharp claws, and they never share their honey.

Bear shares these fears with a stranger who is nearby.   Even the youngest audience will know that the sympathetic stranger Bear is talking to is a bee.

Finally the sympathetic stranger asks Bear if he has ever seen a bee.  “Never!” says Bear.  Bee then continues to explain to Bear that he is describing himself, at which point Bear dissolves into tears.  “I’m a Bee!  Oh No! cry’s Bear.

Bee quickly corrects Bear’s mistake and also reveals what he is, “A Bee!”  Bee also lets Bear know that he would happily share some honey with Bear. As Bear can see, Bee doesn’t have large teeth, and sharp claws.

Author Sergio Ruzzier, clearly understands the psyches of young children, and his simple vocabulary and lots of repetition make for a great book.  Ruzzier’s, comical illustrations of digitally colored pen-and-ink drawings are simple and uncluttered, so as to keep the focus on the two friends.

The Bear and Bee is a wonderful story with humor and sensitivity.  It is a sure hit for the story-hour group and is also a great choice for the beginning reader.

 Happy Reading!
