Red Bluff native, and mostly self-taught photographer, potter and woodworker, Bruce E. Ross, will exhibit his artistic creations at the Main Street Gallery in September. He has received several awards for his photography in different juried shows. Photography became his first creative endeavor while serving in the United States Army in Germany. With his first paycheck he purchased a SLR (single-lens reflex camera) and his second to buy extra lenses. The aesthetic values seen in Asian art are reflected in his work, a value he attributes to his mother.

Ross became a potter and “throwing pots” after the birth of his first child, about 30 years ago. He and his wife began taking ceramics classes together after she expressed her frustration with having to stay home with a newborn. Ross took ceramics classes from “Palul” (a synonym for Paul) Rideout, a Shasta College instructor. Eager to gain more control of the firing process, Ross built his own kiln. He describes his ceramic bowls as “tacitly and visually aesthetically pleasing” as well as functional. “Opening the kiln after a glaze firing is like Christmas morning several times a year,” according to Ross.

Ross began working with wood a couple of years ago. He states, “I just really enjoy bringing out the beauty that lies within the wood. The process is somewhat the reverse of throwing pots in that a lump of clay expands into the form it wants to be whereas “turning” or carving wood, reduces it to the form contained within the wood.”
