Workshop description: Negative painting (painting around the object rather than painting the subject itself) is a technique that increases interest and variety in a painting. Betty will take the mystery out of this technique with fun exercises in the medium of transparent watercolor that will help you visualize and paint negative shapes, create hard and soft edges, mix colors by glazing, and create variety by adding layers.

About the artist: From childhood, Betty Pestoni was always doodling or drawing. Her love of nature has been enhanced by her years as Trinity Nursery owner. Many of her florals and landscapes reflect this love of nature. Her fancifulness appears in her paintings in unexpected ways…a gnome peers out from under a leaf; a fairy figure hides in the grasses. She is one of Trinity County’s major artists, and her work has won awards and been admired for years, in and out of the community.
